The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, a National Historic Landmark site, is the only active archaeological site in South Dakota that is open to the public. The Village’s Boehnen Memorial Museum and Thomsen Center Archeodome are among the most unique attractions in the state.
Explore the ancient secrets while walking in the footsteps of a people who lived 1,000 years ago. The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is your opportunity to travel back to the time of the ancestors of the Mandan, the tribe Lewis & Clark encountered in the winter of 1804. Investigate the shelter construction, innovative hunting tools and agricultural techniques of these resourceful people. Special events like live digs, story tellers, Archeology Days, and more are scheduled throughout the summer. Our picturesque grounds are perfect for picnics, birdwatching and lakefront biking and hikes! Kids dig for free arrowhead! Our Shoppe Antiquary features Native American made jewelry, pottery, art and more.
