Meet Ty, Dawn, and their two daughters, Ella and Megan, along with their 1-year-old yellow lab, Biscuit. Originally hailing from different corners of the United States, this family found themselves embarking on a new chapter of life in the welcoming community of Mitchell, South Dakota. Their journey from Michigan to the heart of South Dakota unfolds with a blend of adventure, warmth, and a dash of serendipity.

Ty, originally from Lakewood, California, and Dawn, from Bellevue, Washington, may have come from different backgrounds, but their paths converged in the Midwest. Their story begins with a blind date arranged by mutual friends in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sparking a romance that has lasted nearly two decades.

The decision to move to Mitchell wasn't initially on their radar. As Ty sought new opportunities in youth ministry, the doors in their current locale didn't swing open as expected. It was their daughters who sparked the idea of considering Mitchell, sensing a hidden potential in this quaint South Dakota town. Following their instincts, the family embraced the prospect of a fresh start.

Arriving in Mitchell, the family found themselves captivated by the charm of the town. From the inviting downtown to the friendly faces that greeted them, Mitchell quickly felt like home. Despite the initial adjustment period of Ty's solo arrival, the warmth of the community smoothed the transition for the entire family.

Engaging with the local community became second nature for the family. They eagerly participated in events like the Parade of Lights, integrated into their daughters' school activities, and explored local cuisine with enthusiasm. One standout encounter was reconnecting with their realtor, Jenny, whose childhood home they purchased. This unexpected twist not only added a personal touch to their new home but also forged lasting connections with the locals.

As they settled into Mitchell, the family uncovered hidden gems around every corner. Whether it was cheering on their students at Friend de Coup or savoring the flavors of local eateries, every experience enriched their newfound life in South Dakota. And while they cherish the vibrant community events, they look forward to exploring the museums and expanding their horizons further.

For those considering a move to Mitchell, Ty and Dawn offer some sage advice: dive in headfirst. Explore the town, engage with the community, and embrace the local culture. Whether it's attending newcomer events by the Chamber’s Community Concierge or finding a sense of belonging in a local church like First Reformed, taking that first step is key to unlocking the true essence of life in Mitchell.

Reflecting on their journey, Ty and Dawn express gratitude for the warm embrace of Mitchell. While they occasionally yearn for the variety of amenities found in larger cities, the sense of community and the welcoming spirit of Mitchell far outweigh any perceived shortcomings. For them, Mitchell isn't just a place to live; it's a place to thrive, grow, and create lasting memories as a family.

In the words of Ty, "Thanks for being the kind of town I’m happy to bring our family to live and thrive in!" With each passing day, Mitchell continues to weave its magic, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of this intrepid family.
